Golden Temple of Lady Mao: Kampot’s New Tourism Landmark

The Golden Temple of Lady Mao, located atop Dvaa Mountain in Kampot province, is poised to become a major tourist attraction, according to the Director of the Kampot Provincial Tourism Department. This new religious site combines breathtaking natural scenery with cultural significance, making it a key addition to Kampot’s growing tourism offerings.

On January 13, 2025, His Excellency Mao Thunin, Kampot’s Provincial Governor, along with his wife, His Excellency Tak Hap, Chairman of the Provincial Council, and other local officials, participated in a ceremonial event marking the relocation of Lady Mao’s statue to the temple’s altar. The Golden Temple, built by His Excellency Mao Thunin and his family, now stands proudly at the summit of Mount Dvaa in Laeang Village, Laeang Commune, Dang Tong District, opposite the old monastery.

A Promising Religious Tourism Site

Mr. Soy Sinol, Director of the Kampot Provincial Tourism Department, emphasized the potential of the Golden Temple to boost religious tourism in the region. Perched on Mount Dvaa, the site offers visitors not only spiritual solace but also panoramic views of Kampot’s mountain ranges and the surrounding province. The pristine air and scenic beauty further enhance its appeal as a tourist hotspot.

“The temple’s construction on this naturally beautiful site will significantly contribute to Kampot’s religious tourism sector,” Mr. Soy stated, noting that its unique location is ideal for attracting both domestic and international visitors.

A Space for Worship and Faith

The head of the Kampot Provincial Department of Cults and Religion, Mr. Naing Yitho, explained that the Golden Temple was designed to preserve the legacy of Lady Mao and provide a spacious, serene environment for worship. While the original Asrama of Lady Mao has been preserved, the new Golden Temple adds a larger facility to accommodate more visitors and enhance the worship experience.

Construction Timeline and Future Prospects

Construction of the Golden Temple of Lady Mao began on April 18, 2024. Upon completion, it is expected to serve as both a religious site and a tourism destination, drawing individuals seeking spiritual enrichment and cultural exploration. As Kampot province continues to develop its tourism infrastructure, the Golden Temple stands as a symbol of the region’s dedication to preserving its heritage while embracing opportunities for growth.
