The 8-meter-tall Seahorse Statue in Kampot province has become a centerpiece of the city, significantly boosting domestic tourism and revitalizing the downtown area. Since its installation, the statue has drawn numerous visitors, highlighting the province’s efforts to enhance its appeal. With a safe and vibrant environment, Kampot is rapidly evolving into one of Cambodia’s most sought-after destinations.
Rising Tourism Numbers
In the first half of 2024, Kampot welcomed over 1.3 million tourists, including 62,000 international visitors—a remarkable 30% increase compared to 2023, according to Soy Sinol, Director of Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism. The city has also become Cambodia’s second most popular New Year countdown destination, hosting nearly 390,000 guests during the celebrations.
The surge in visitor numbers can be attributed to a combination of infrastructure improvements, such as new sidewalks and an upgraded riverside promenade, and the addition of attractions like beaches and public spaces. Enhanced safety measures, including increased security cameras and street lighting, have further elevated Kampot’s appeal to both residents and travelers.
Diverse Experiences Await Travelers
Tourists are increasingly drawn to Kampot for its unique blend of activities, including hikes in National Parks, waterfall excursions, pepper farm tours, cooking classes, and adrenaline-filled adventures. The province is also gaining popularity among retirees seeking a peaceful environment, high-quality healthcare, diverse food options, and a relaxed lifestyle.
Hospitality businesses are thriving, with many reporting significant year-on-year growth. Steve Jolly, owner of Karma Traders Kampot, noted a 30% increase in visitor numbers in 2024 compared to 2023. Similarly, Paolo Moscardini of Rikitikitavi highlighted longer stays, with guests often extending their visits to explore more of what Kampot has to offer.
Evolving Tourist Demographics
The demographic of visitors to Kampot has shifted notably in recent years. While backpackers remain a common sight, there has been a rise in “flashpackers” with higher budgets, as well as families and couples seeking memorable holidays. Domestic tourism is also on the rise, driven by Cambodia’s growing middle class.
“Guests are staying longer, typically around three nights, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in Kampot’s laid-back atmosphere and numerous attractions,” explained Jolly. Activities like kayaking, hiking, and cooking classes offer a refreshing alternative to traditional tourist spots like Angkor Wat.
Infrastructure Driving Growth
The province’s ongoing infrastructure projects are key to its tourism boom. Major highways, such as Highway 3 from Phnom Penh, have been fully sealed, cutting travel time to Kampot to less than 2.5 hours. The upcoming completion of Highway 3 to Sihanoukville in 2025 is expected to further enhance connectivity.
Additionally, Kampot International Tourist Port is nearing completion, promising to improve accessibility from destinations like Phu Quoc (Vietnam), Sihanoukville, and Koh Kong. Rumors of cruise ships docking in Kampot further underline its growing importance as a travel hub.
Train services linking Kampot with Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Kep have also been upgraded, providing travelers with more comfortable and safe options.
Regional Trends Boosting Tourism
Kampot is benefiting from broader regional trends, such as a decline in tourism to Sihanoukville and the growing popularity of Cambodia’s southern coastline. Nearby destinations like Kep and Rabbit Island have also seen significant investments, enhancing the overall appeal of the region.
However, challenges remain. Steve Jolly pointed out that Cambodia’s visa policies are less competitive than those of neighboring countries like Thailand and Vietnam, potentially deterring some international visitors. Efforts to streamline visa processes and improve flight connections could help overcome this barrier.
Future Outlook
As Kampot undergoes a transformation, its potential as a premier tourism destination is becoming increasingly evident. Upcoming events, such as the 2024 Sea Festival, are expected to draw large crowds and further boost the local economy. With continued investments in infrastructure, marketing, and hospitality services, Kampot is well-positioned to attract a diverse mix of tourists in the years to come.
Local tourism authorities, businesses, and the government are collaborating to ensure that Kampot is not just a stopover destination but a must-visit location. By promoting the region’s unique attractions and fostering sustainable tourism, Kampot is poised to solidify its status as a jewel of Cambodia’s southern coast.
