Kampot province has achieved a major milestone in sustainable development with the declaration of Banteay Meas district as Cambodia’s first smoke-free zone. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), has significantly reduced reliance on charcoal and wood for cooking, promoting the use of clean energy sources like electricity, LPG, solar stoves, and biogas.
Since the programme’s launch in 2022, the number of families using eco-friendly cooking solutions has risen from 41% to nearly 100% of the district’s 92,000 residents. This transformation is not only improving air quality and public health but also reinforcing Kampot’s reputation as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.
The Smoke-Free Village programme is now expanding across 487 villages in Kampot, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, and Battambang, supporting Cambodia’s goal of achieving 70% clean energy usage by 2030. Officials emphasize that this success demonstrates the power of community-driven environmental initiatives.
For eco-conscious travelers, Kampot is becoming an ideal destination for sustainable tourism, nature retreats, and outdoor getaways. Visitors can explore the province’s eco-tourism sites, riverside landscapes, and camping experiences, all while supporting local environmental efforts. Whether you’re interested in glamping, adventure tourism, or nature-friendly accommodations, Kampot’s commitment to sustainability makes it a must-visit.
