As we welcome the Khmer New Year festival, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) is set to officially open the International Tourist Port of Kampot on April 3rd. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to enhance tourism in the region, making it an exciting destination for visitors heading to Kampot.
Prime Minister Hun Manet will inaugurate this modern port, which spans 4.25 hectares in Chum Kriel village, Teuk Chhou district, Kampot province. Eng Vengsun, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and chairman of the inauguration committee, confirmed that important preparations are underway to ensure a successful ceremony.
The International Tourist Port of Kampot is a pivotal development that stems from a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the MPWT, and is managed by the AZ Group.
Part of the “Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Tourism Infrastructure” project, this port is designed to address the infrastructure challenges impacting tourism growth in Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong, as noted by the ADB.
Construction took five years, from August 2018 to June 2022, with a total investment of $9.27 million. The project faced a two-year delay due to the finalization of detailed technical designs and interruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The port boasts a large pier, featuring an arrival hall with customs and immigration services, administrative offices, and commercial spaces. Essential amenities include parking, electricity, water supply, sanitation, and an on-site wastewater treatment system. The project also upgraded a 2.3-kilometer public road connecting the port to the vibrant city of Kampot.
