This state-of-the-art facility is expected to enhance tourism in the region, making it an exciting destination for visitors heading to Kampot.

Prime Minister Hun Manet will inaugurate this modern port, which spans 4.25 hectares in Chum Kriel village, Teuk Chhou district, Kampot province. Kampot Leads the Way with Cambodia’s First “Smoke-Free” District

Kampot province has achieved a major milestone in sustainable development with the declaration of Banteay Meas district as Cambodia’s first smoke-free zone. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), has significantly reduced reliance on charcoal and wood for cooking, promoting the use of clean energy sources like electricity, LPG, solar stoves, and biogas.

Since the programme’s launch in 2022, the number of families using eco-friendly cooking solutions has risen from 41% to nearly 100% of the district’s 92,000 residents. This transformation is not only improving air quality and public health but also reinforcing Kampot’s reputation as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.

The Smoke-Free Village programme is now expanding across 487 villages in Kampot, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, and Battambang, supporting Cambodia’s goal of achieving 70% clean energy usage by 2030. Officials emphasize that this success demonstrates the power of community-driven environmental initiatives.

For eco-conscious travelers, Kampot is becoming an ideal destination for sustainable tourism, nature retreats, and outdoor getaways. Visitors can explore the province’s eco-tourism sites, riverside landscapes, and camping experiences, all while supporting local environmental efforts. Whether you’re interested in glamping, adventure tourism, or nature-friendly accommodations, Kampot’s commitment to sustainability makes it a must-visit.

Kampot Boosts Infrastructure and Tourism Ahead of Khmer New Year

In preparation for the Khmer New Year, Kampot is undergoing significant infrastructure improvements and tourism development to attract more visitors. Key upgrades include road resurfacing along Kampong Bay riverside and a new landmark near the Kampot Provincial Hall, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a top travel destination in Cambodia.

Governor Mao Thonin led an inspection of the Kampong Bay riverside road, ensuring smooth access from the New Stone Bridge to the Dolphin Roundabout—a crucial route for both locals and tourists. The province is also improving waterfront roads, enhancing accessibility to Kampot’s key attractions.

These initiatives align with Kampot’s long-term vision to expand eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and sustainable travel. With increasing visitor numbers, Kampot is becoming a premier destination for nature lovers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Iconic spots like the Giant Clock and the Sea Horse Fountain have already boosted tourism, and further developments will solidify Kampot as a must-visit city in Cambodia.

For those seeking an authentic camping experience in Kampot, these improvements make it easier to explore the region’s natural beauty, from the Bokor Mountains to the serene riverside landscapes. Whether you’re into glamping, outdoor activities, or eco-friendly stays, Kampot now offers even better conditions for an unforgettable getaway.

Kampot’s CCTV Cameras to Provide Safety for Locals and Tourists

The installation of security cameras across Kampot province is enhancing safety for residents and tourists, according to Kampot Provincial Police.

Major General Mao Chanmathurith, Chief of Kampot Provincial Police, announced that security cameras are being set up in key locations within Kampot City and its districts. To date, 60 cameras have been installed across 10 strategic sites, with installation fully completed at four of them.

This initiative, which started over three years ago, aims to prevent theft and other crimes while promoting a sense of safety. Maj. Gen. Chanmathurith expressed hopes to finish the installations across Kampot City and the provincial districts by mid-next year. Cameras are being prioritized near schools, markets, city centers, and natural resort areas.

Soy Sinol, Director of the Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism, praised the project, highlighting its potential to improve security and foster confidence among national and international tourists. While some eco-tourism areas are not yet fully equipped with cameras, Sinol emphasized the importance of extending the initiative to all major tourist destinations to alleviate safety concerns during sightseeing visits.

“I would be happy if the whole province was equipped with cameras because it would provide visitors with a greater sense of trust and safety,” Sinol said.

The installation of security cameras is expected to bolster Kampot’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for tourists while ensuring the well-being of its residents.

Kampot Salt Production Sees Record Growth in 2024

Cambodia has achieved a milestone in salt production, with Kampot province leading the charge, producing approximately 130,000 tonnes of geographical indicator (GI) salt in 2024. This record-breaking figure was made possible due to favorable climatic conditions and the recognition of Kampot salt as a GI product in European Union markets.

Bun Narin, President of the Association of GI Kampot-Kep Salt Producers, highlighted the growth: “Salt output in 2024 reached more than 130,000 tonnes, surpassing the 80,000 tonnes produced in 2023.” Narin noted that farmers in Kampot and Kep provinces have fully resumed natural salt production processes, achieving significant yields this year.

Key Facts on Salt Production in Kampot and Kep

  • Production Area: Salt production in Cambodia spans 3,987 hectares, with 3,489 hectares located in Kampot province and the remainder in Kep province.
  • Season: The salt production season typically runs from December to May but can extend into June during prolonged hot weather.
  • Domestic Demand: Cambodia consumes between 70,000 and 100,000 tonnes of salt annually to meet domestic needs.

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation has been closely monitoring salt fields, with accurate data on production capabilities expected by May. Currently, salt prices range between 10,000 and 12,000 riels ($2.5-$3) per 50 kg sack.

Challenges and Future Prospects

In years with unfavorable weather, such as heavy rainfall, salt production decreases significantly, forcing Cambodia to import salt to meet domestic demand. However, the introduction of GI-tagged Kampot salt has provided an opportunity for international market expansion, fetching higher prices compared to ordinary salt.

In 2023, the Ministry of Commerce officially inaugurated the GI status of Kampot and Kep salt. Following this achievement, the ministry has submitted a proposal to register the product in the EU market, a move expected to further elevate the global recognition and economic potential of Kampot’s salt industry.

Strategic Importance and Conservation Efforts

The government has prioritized the management and conservation of Kampot-Kep’s ancestral salt fields, recognizing their strategic value. Ministries have been tasked with ensuring sustainable production practices and enhancing the industry’s long-term viability. This focus not only preserves a cultural heritage but also strengthens Cambodia’s position as a key player in the global salt market.

Kampot, Cambodia’s Next Fastest Emerging Tourism Hotspot

The 8-meter-tall Seahorse Statue in Kampot province has become a centerpiece of the city, significantly boosting domestic tourism and revitalizing the downtown area. Since its installation, the statue has drawn numerous visitors, highlighting the province’s efforts to enhance its appeal. With a safe and vibrant environment, Kampot is rapidly evolving into one of Cambodia’s most sought-after destinations.

Rising Tourism Numbers

In the first half of 2024, Kampot welcomed over 1.3 million tourists, including 62,000 international visitors—a remarkable 30% increase compared to 2023, according to Soy Sinol, Director of Kampot Provincial Department of Tourism. The city has also become Cambodia’s second most popular New Year countdown destination, hosting nearly 390,000 guests during the celebrations.

The surge in visitor numbers can be attributed to a combination of infrastructure improvements, such as new sidewalks and an upgraded riverside promenade, and the addition of attractions like beaches and public spaces. Enhanced safety measures, including increased security cameras and street lighting, have further elevated Kampot’s appeal to both residents and travelers.

Diverse Experiences Await Travelers

Tourists are increasingly drawn to Kampot for its unique blend of activities, including hikes in National Parks, waterfall excursions, pepper farm tours, cooking classes, and adrenaline-filled adventures. The province is also gaining popularity among retirees seeking a peaceful environment, high-quality healthcare, diverse food options, and a relaxed lifestyle.

Hospitality businesses are thriving, with many reporting significant year-on-year growth. Steve Jolly, owner of Karma Traders Kampot, noted a 30% increase in visitor numbers in 2024 compared to 2023. Similarly, Paolo Moscardini of Rikitikitavi highlighted longer stays, with guests often extending their visits to explore more of what Kampot has to offer.

Evolving Tourist Demographics

The demographic of visitors to Kampot has shifted notably in recent years. While backpackers remain a common sight, there has been a rise in “flashpackers” with higher budgets, as well as families and couples seeking memorable holidays. Domestic tourism is also on the rise, driven by Cambodia’s growing middle class.

“Guests are staying longer, typically around three nights, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in Kampot’s laid-back atmosphere and numerous attractions,” explained Jolly. Activities like kayaking, hiking, and cooking classes offer a refreshing alternative to traditional tourist spots like Angkor Wat.

Infrastructure Driving Growth

The province’s ongoing infrastructure projects are key to its tourism boom. Major highways, such as Highway 3 from Phnom Penh, have been fully sealed, cutting travel time to Kampot to less than 2.5 hours. The upcoming completion of Highway 3 to Sihanoukville in 2025 is expected to further enhance connectivity.

Additionally, Kampot International Tourist Port is nearing completion, promising to improve accessibility from destinations like Phu Quoc (Vietnam), Sihanoukville, and Koh Kong. Rumors of cruise ships docking in Kampot further underline its growing importance as a travel hub.

Train services linking Kampot with Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, and Kep have also been upgraded, providing travelers with more comfortable and safe options.

Regional Trends Boosting Tourism

Kampot is benefiting from broader regional trends, such as a decline in tourism to Sihanoukville and the growing popularity of Cambodia’s southern coastline. Nearby destinations like Kep and Rabbit Island have also seen significant investments, enhancing the overall appeal of the region.

However, challenges remain. Steve Jolly pointed out that Cambodia’s visa policies are less competitive than those of neighboring countries like Thailand and Vietnam, potentially deterring some international visitors. Efforts to streamline visa processes and improve flight connections could help overcome this barrier.

Future Outlook

As Kampot undergoes a transformation, its potential as a premier tourism destination is becoming increasingly evident. Upcoming events, such as the 2024 Sea Festival, are expected to draw large crowds and further boost the local economy. With continued investments in infrastructure, marketing, and hospitality services, Kampot is well-positioned to attract a diverse mix of tourists in the years to come.

Local tourism authorities, businesses, and the government are collaborating to ensure that Kampot is not just a stopover destination but a must-visit location. By promoting the region’s unique attractions and fostering sustainable tourism, Kampot is poised to solidify its status as a jewel of Cambodia’s southern coast.
